AIKEN PREPARATORY SCHOOL ANNOUNCES THE HARRINGTON SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Aiken, South Carolina, January 20, 2012 — In anticipation of celebrating the centennial anniversary of Aiken Preparatory School, the Board of Trustees is honored to announce the inauguration of the Harrington Scholarship Program, named in honor of Robert J. Harrington, Sr. Harrington is an educator of sixty-six years, headmaster emeritus, and a man who has lived his life embodying the values of an independent school education.
This program is designed with a commitment on the part of the Harrington Scholar, the recipient’s family, and Aiken Preparatory School. While a student at Aiken Prep, the recipient must show leadership through the design of a service-learning project, and its implementation each year that the student is a Harrington Scholar. The family must demonstrate commitment through matching the scholarship funds. The school completes the commitment by awarding 50% reduction of the tuition over four years.
One Harrington Scholar will be selected for the upcoming 2012 ninth grade class, and in addition to the honor of this designation, the student will receive the tuition scholarship. Over four years, assuming continued eligibility, the value of the scholarship will exceed $25,000 to support attendance at Aiken Prep. The plan is to continue to add one Harrington Scholar over the following three years. In 2016, when Aiken Prep celebrates its 100th anniversary, a total of four Harrington Scholars will have been enrolled and will be added to the list of scholars on display at Aiken Prep.
The Harrington Scholarship Program is open to all incoming ninth grade students, including students at Aiken Prep or new enrollees with a minimum average of 90 or it’s Grade Point Average Equivalent. A Harrington Scholar must exemplify the qualities which Mr. Harrington believes are attributed to an outstanding student: academic achievement, motivation, accountability, citizenship, leadership, school and community involvement, and service. Harrington Scholars are also expected to embody the qualities of integrity, devotion, goodness, and caring for others.
To be considered, a completed application must be submitted to the Harrington Scholarship Selection Committee by March 1, 2012. Applications are available at Aiken Preparatory School or online at www.aikenprep.org. The first Harrington Scholar will be announced on April 2, 2012.
