APS Admissions Process
The goal of the APS Admissions office is to work together with you and your family to decide if APS is the best school for your child. Aiken Prep School seeks to enroll students who possess:
  • Strength of character and personal integrity.
  • Academic and intellectual promise.
  • Motivation to succeed.
  • A willingness to participate in school life.
  • Aspirations to excel.
Aiken Prep School is currently accepting applications for the 2007-2008 academic year. We encourage you to begin the application process as soon as possible. We will accept applications for mid- year entry if space is available.

Students are evaluated for admission following the completion of the steps below:

1. Parent/Student interview, visiting day, and tour
The purpose of each interview is to discuss the educational goals and expectations of each student and to explain the philosophy of Aiken Preparatory School. By spending time in classes, students have the chance to meet teachers, participate in class discussions, and sense the spirit of APS.
  • Aiken Prep faculty will observe prospective students as they visit, noting academic readiness in the classroom and behavior. A tour of the campus follows each interview.
2. Application Process
  • All Applicants must fill out the Application for Admissions and return it to the Director of Admission with the $50.00 application fee.
  • Student applications for grades 1-12 additionally require a Recommendation for Admission from someone who is well acquainted with the prospective student.
  • Students in grades 6-12 are also required to provide an English Recommendationand a Math Recommendation from previous or current Math and English teachers, along with graded writing samples or portfolios with their applications. The student must also complete an Applicant Profile.
  • A School Records Request form must be signed by the parent and submitted to the previous school (for transcripts, test scores, discipline and attendance information).

3. Testing and Screening

Aiken Prep uses admission testing to ensure that prospective students are able to find success in our school.
  • The individually administered admission test used in 4K is the Brigance test. This is a readiness test and is used in conjunction with classroom observation. 5K applicants take the Kindergarten readiness portion of the NEAT test.
  • We administer the NEAT (Norris Educational Achievement Test) to applicants for 1st through 5th grades during the school visit. This test is a screening for reading and math skills compared to age and grade appropriate norms.
  • For those students interested in grades 6-12, the Admission Committee reviews standardized test scores received from current/previous schools. If further screening is deemed necessary to complete the application file, Aiken Prep will administer achievement testing. This can take place when the student makes his or her official admission visit or at another time.
4. Acceptance and Enrollment
  • Once all materials are complete and students have visited and completed testing, the Admission Committee meets to review each applicant's folder. The Committee can accept a student immediately, accept a student "with conditions" (repeat a grade, take summer courses, work with learning strategists), deny admission, or place a student in a "wait pool"(if a class is full).
  • Once accepted, a financial grant may be determined and awarded based on demonstrated need. Parents and students are notified and sent a written Enrollment Contract. Once the Enrollment Contract is returned with a non-refundable deposit, the student is a member of the Aiken Prep family.
